What are Regular Verbs

Regular verbs are the verbs which use the regular pattern of formation, and inflection. It means that there are a few set rules to change a verb into past and past participle tense. Regular verbs conform to all those rules and simply add -d and -ed to its base form. These rules are,

• Turning a verb into the past tense by adding -ed at the end. For example,
Walk – Walked
Jump – Jumped

• If a verb ends -e, then change it into the past tense by adding -d at the end. For example,
Thrive – Thrived
Dance – Danced

• If a verb ends with -y, then add -ied after omitting the -y. For example
Cry – Cried
Fry – Fried

• When a verb ends in the CVC pattern, then the final consonant is doubled with an addition of -ed. However, if the verb ends with -y, -x, -w, then we do not double the consonant. For example
Prefer – Preferred
Shun – Shunned
Play – Played
Fix – Fixed
