Proper Nouns

A noun that refers to a specific person, place, thing, or idea is termed a proper noun. They are easily differentiable from common nouns because they are always capitalized, regardless of their place in a sentence.

Example
Abraham Lincoln was a lawyer.

Abraham Lincoln refers to a specific person in history, so it is a proper noun. Lawyer refers to a common profession, as many people can be a lawyer. So, it is a common noun.

Examples
I named my dog Mr. Barks.
Julia is a huge fan of Michael Jackson.
England won the match.

Proper nouns do not usually need an article or a determiner. However, there are exceptions to this rule. The name of some countries is preceded by an article, which isn’t capitalized.

Example
The United States of America
The People’s Republic of China

Some proper nouns exist in pluralized form and are always preceded by a definite article. The article is not capitalized.

Example
Clint always dreamed of climbing the Himalayas.
The Academy Awards are also known as the Oscars.

Proper nouns can also exist as common nouns when referring to several people, places, or things with the same name.

Example
The Bakers are a nice family.
I don’t mean that George, I mean the George with dark hair.
