Irregular Verbs

What are Irregular Verbs

Verbs are words that show any form of action. Irregular verbs are those verbs that do not end with -d and -ed when they are changed in to the past tense. Apparently, these verbs seem rare but they are very common. The only difference between regular verbs and irregular verbs lies in the tricky spellings when changed into the past tense, which is why these words require a lot of practice and patience from the learner. Irregular verbs, when changed into the past tense do not follow the regular inflection, for example:
– The past tense of go is went.
– Is turns into was.
– Drink turns into drank and so on.

However, irregular verbs are of many kinds and it determines their past and past participle form. Certain irregular verbs have different forms in each tense, i.e. present, past, and past participle. For example:
Eat – Ate – Eaten
See – Saw- Seen

Some irregular words share the same past and past participle forms. For example:
Win – won – won
Make – made – made

Another form of irregular verbs is those that only change their form in the past tense and stay the same in the present and past participle. These forms of verbs are hard to remember, which is why it is important to remember them. For example,
Come – came – come
Become – became – become

The last kind of irregular verbs is those which do not change their form at all. For example:
Cut – cut – cut
Put – put – put
Let – let – let
