What are Vowels

The English language has 26 alphabets. 5 out of these 26 alphabets are vowels i.e. a, e, i, o, and u, and the rest are called consonants. However, in some cases, y is also considered a vowel and called an honorary vowel but it is not a vowel in itself. The vowel is the letter and the sound of the vowel alphabets that involve the vibration of the vocal chord.

So what purpose does the vowel serve? When a vowel is paired with a consonant it makes a syllable. For example:

Hot – H and T are the consonants and O is the vowel.
Tin – T and N are the consonants and I is the vowel.
Bat – B and T are the consonants and A is the vowel.
