Short Vowel Words

What are Short Vowels

English alphabets are divided among consonants and vowels. Vowels are a, e, i, o, and u, whereas the rest of the alphabets are consonants. Short vowels refer to those vowels which follow the CVC pattern, i.e. consonant-vowel-consonant. Their pronunciation depends on their phonic sounds. Let’s learn more about short vowels with a few examples, cub, mad, hop, and rat.

In these examples, all the vowels have a short sound i.e. /u/, /a/, /o/, /i/. However, these short vowels can be turned into long vowels too. By adding an e, cub becomes cube i.e. k-yu-b, mad becomes made i.e m-ai-d, hop becomes hope i.e. h-ou-p. The short vowel sounds for the vowels are as follows

– A is pronounced as AH
– E is pronounced as EH
– I is pronounced as IH
– O is pronounced as AWE
– U is pronounced as UH
